Some traditions unite the generations, like toasting marshmallows over a bonfire or barbecue. Well, we wondered how we might riff on that time-honored tradition, and here’s what we came up with… after your marshmallow is toasted to golden perfection, dip it in a bowl of melted chocolate… or, and we think this is genius… our talented pal Linda Giuca of Al Forno Restaurant in Old Saybrook, Conn., suggests stuffing each marshmallow with a soft caramel chew before putting it on the stick; the inside melts while the outside toasts.

Hello Faith,
I was listening to your show today, and I caught the tail end of a recipe that had to do with s’mores. You and your guest were talking about how you could roast marshmallows in the winter; specifically, toasting them over a fire in the fireplace. One of your guests even mentioned trying to toast a marshmallow over a candle!! Her comment reminded me of a time when I visited a friend and, nightly, she toasted marshmallows over the open flame of a gas stove! She even took her toasted marshmallows and made s’mores!

There is something about these late night cravings…I never know which one might appear, and sometimes it’s entirely impractical. At 11, for instance, I will begin desperately wanting a bowl of linguini and fresh clams sprinkled with crispy pancetta. I do what my girlfriend Amy encourages me to do, “surf the urge,” riding it from the start to the finish. Sometimes it’s so convincing I feel as if I’ve eaten the thing. But I digress! Your friend and the stovetop s’mores…sounds delicious, though it goes without saying it must be done with the greatest care. I’m always afraid kids will try it on their own when parents are away! The truth is I feel like doing it right now after reading your description. Thanks for a great story! Cheers, Faith
