From Faith: First, our resident bartender, Anthony DeSerio, will give you the history of the hot toddy — mixing a spirit with water and sugar — but he settles into amusement, in his good-natured way, knowing we want to taste his best toddy, a soothing little number involving a whiskey from France. Here’s the punchline; it’s a doozy.
Now, you can use any spirit, tea, or type of sugar and have it turn out fine. (I use honey to make a toddy when I’m hoarse.) But we’ve given Anthony free reign here, asking him to use the exact ingredients to make a very special warmer. Follow his outline if you prefer your own ingredients, he says, or stick with the plan.

Ingredients
- boiling water
- orange ginger tea any brand
- sugar raw
- 2 ounces whiskey Bastille brand preferably
- dash nutmeg

- In your favorite mug add two ounces of whiskey. Anthony prefers Bastille Whiskey, from the Cognac region of France, since it has apple, pear and apricot notes. Bourbon also works. Mix in sugar to your taste, or none at all.
- Fill the mug with hot orange ginger tea. Add a whisper of nutmeg on top. Stir and enjoy.
