From discrimination to delicious. That’s the pitch line a scriptwriter would use to sell producers on a movie about the Shandy Gaff, a terrific cocktail that is simply half Pilsner ale and half ginger beer. Why discrimination?
The Shandy was invented because bartenders wouldn’t serve women the same drinks they created for men, nor could women sit alone at the bar. Instead, barkeeps gave women a shandy, half beer and lemonade, or, in our case, top quality ginger beer. (We like Fever Tree brand.) Men and women drink it now without knowing its history. It’s just plain good, especially with party food.
