It’s made from the bordeaux blend of grapes that are the essence of food-friendly wines. Mateo, as it’s called, is a plummy offering from movie director Francis Ford Coppola’s vineyards in California. It’s a good deal at $17-$18 if you’re interested in bringing a wine to your host’s next dinner party. It matches well with anything grilled, from swordfish and salmon, to vegetables, pork and chicken. It stood up to Chris Prosperi’s intense tomato sauce, too. Tell your wine store the distributor is Connecticut Distributors. Feel free to call ahead to ask them to stock it for you; it should be ready within 24 hours if it’s not on their shelves.
