A New Bargain Boxed Red Wine From France: Vignes des Lumieres

Vignes_Clos des Lumieres_boxed red

Delicious, we said, filling a glass from the spout on the side of the box of Vignes des Lumieres. In that glass, a cool deep red Rhône wine, with body and a sporty quality, perfect with just about any grilled food. Four bottles in one box, at about $8.50 per bottle. And with no oxygen contact possible, it lasts for months—if you want it to. We like to chill ours in the summer. Quality, inexpensive boxed wines like Vignes des Lumieres’ red have been a hit in Europe for a long time. Now, this pleasurable bargain is ours, too.

Tell your wine store that Winebow is the distributor of Vignes des Lumieres (aka Clos des Lumieres) Rhône Red. That way they can look it up easily.

Hey Jack. Wise Old Dog and West Side Wines in the West Hartford area are good bets off the top. Give us a city and we’ll find a shop for you that either has it or would be willing to order it.

Hi Bob. Alex let me know that two places near you would be willing to order: Stew Leonard’s (yeah, Stew’s!) and Ancona’s. Let them know the distributor is Winebow, and circle back if you have any trouble. I hope you enjoy it!

I special ordered a box of the rosé from the Wine Thief. They should be able to order the red, too. Odd Bin’s Fine Wine & Spirits (on Whitney) is also a very good bet. The owner is always willing to order wines we feature for listeners. (http://oddbinswineshop.com/).

I was so surprised when I saw this at Liquor World, 136 Berlin Rd, Cromwell, CT, 860-635-3876. Arun told me they have had it since about the week before the Faith Middleton show aired. I cannot wait to try it.

I’m looking forward to trying this; one of my (and guests’) favorite inexpensive reds is Yellow Tail’s Shiraz-Grenache. Few places that stock the Aussie label carry this blend. How this French iteration was described is exactly what I love: dark tannins, bright berry notes, stands to to strong flavored meat dishes and cheeses.

There are lots of shops in Fairfield I’m sure would be willing to order a box for you. Call ahead! Because of space, you won’t find the selection of boxed wines in stock that you’ll find of bottled wines. Boxed wines are a harder sell for most small shop owners, but many are willing to special order a box for a loyal customer. Let the staff know the distributor is Winebow (it helps when they look it up in the book).

Hi Susan, Seaside Wine & Spirits on Main St. in Old Saybrook has several boxes in stock right now. A staffer told me they have the rose, too, if interested.

After hearing this broadcast, I was thinking it would be great for my daughter’s wedding next year in Seattle WA. Any place out there that you know of where we can purchase it?

Not sure, Susan, but do an online search of wine shops near the venue and start calling. Just like in CT, most shops are willing to special order wines, especially if you’re ordering multiple cases, as you’re likely to do for a wedding. (Note: There are 6 boxes in a case of boxed wine, as opposed to 12 bottles in a traditional case of wine). Good luck!

I wish I had a list of shops to give you. Please pick your favorite shop (or one that looks like the staff will be helpful) and call ahead. Ask if the manager would be willing to order it for you. More often than not, a good shop is happy to special order for customers.

I was lucky enough to get this wine at Big Buy Wines & Spirits in Plainville, CT. The 2018 CDR vintage is outstanding!

p.s. I didn’t buy it all. I left some for others.
