You don’t have to be a wine expert or fancy sommelier to really appreciate a glass of wine. The key to enjoying wine is to not be intimidated by the experience, whether you’re drinking a glass at home or in a restaurant, whether you’re savoring a value wine or a high-end bottle. Wine is meant to bring pleasure, not stress! Here’s how to get the most out of a glass of wine.
After you pour a glass, look at it; take it in. Be present. Be aware. Give it a swirl in the glass. Be open to using all your senses to heighten the moment you’re about to have when you take that first sip. As you take a sip, breathe oxygen over the wine as it goes into your mouth.
The whole game is simply to be present, to be aware.
Go slow, hold the sip in your mouth for a few seconds.
Once you’ve sipped, ask yourself: Is there a little echo in the back of my throat? If the answer is yes, you are in the presence of a good wine. Enjoy it.
