This month, watch for a riveting memoir called The Red Ribbon by Nancy Freund Bills. While the book is about what happened when two members of the same family were struck by lightning, in its pages I found an incomplete but nevertheless enchanting reference to Betty Crocker’s 1963 tapioca pudding recipe. It was, says the author, all these decades later, the most delicious tapioca she’s ever tasted. Her memoir is something, trust me, and now I’m on a hunt for this specific 1963 recipe. Anybody? (The Red Ribbon is out May 28, published by She Writes Press.)

Dear Faith,
Thank you for sharing your kind comments about my book, The Red Ribbon. I hope it will make you smile to know that I was surprised this week when a new friend made tapioca for me. I met her playing Mah Jong, and she invited a foursome of us to her home near Wolfesneck Park, a beautiful spot overlooking the ocean. I had shared an advanced reading copy of my book with her, and in honor of the chapter, “An Ode to Tapioca,” she served tapioca with a drizzle of blueberry sauce.
Sincerely,
Nancy
