What does it mean to be a “craft cocktail?” It means that all the ingredients are pure, fresh, made from scratch. For instance, you won’t find store bought chocolate syrup or any pre-flavored spirits in this over-the-top delicious martini by Anthony DeSerio, our chief cocktail contributor. Anthony awards the best craft martini at our annual Faith Middleton Food Schmooze® Martini Competition, and based on this beautiful cocktail, CT bartenders/competitors, you all best bring your A game. It’s fabulous. Definitely one of Faith’s all-time favorites.

No one on The Food Schmooze® team makes a better craft (dessert!) cocktail than Anthony DeSerio. This chocolate martini, made with Anthony's homemade dark AND milk chocolate syrup was rich with just the right amount of salt to keep things interesting. Anthony uses Tito's vodka here because it tastes sweeter, has less heat, and almost no spice or citrus notes. It's a good neutral base that lets the chocolate shine.

- 1 dark chocolate bar any brand of good quality you like is fine
- 1 milk chocolate bar any brand of good quality you like is fine
- 1/8 - 1/4 cup hot water
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt or to taste
for the martini
- 1-1/5 oz. vodka preferably Tito's
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla concentrated extract
- 1-1/2 oz. Salted Chocolate Syrup
- 1 oz. heavy cream
- 1 oz. simple syrup
Servings: cocktail
Instructions
Make the Salted Chocolate Syrup
- To make the Salted Chocolate Syrup: In a measuring cup combine 1/4 cup crushed dark chocolate , 1/4 cup crushed milk chocolate, and slowly stir in the hot water until you get the thickness you desire (should be more watery than thick).
- Add salt, in parts, to taste.
- Set a small amount aside in a shallow bowl or dish to rim the cocktail glasses. Store the rest in a covered refrigerator safe container or jar (use for ice cream and desserts if you like!)
Make the Simple Syrup
- Add 1/2 cup hot water to 1/2 cup sugar, and stir until sugar dissolves completely.
- Place in a refrigerator safe container and let cool to room temp. Store in the refrigerator when not in use.
Make the martini
- Rim a chilled cocktail glass with some of the Salted Chocolate Syrup.
- Combine vodka, vanilla, Salted Chocolate Syrup, heavy cream, and Simple Syrup in a shaker without ice and shake hard for 20 seconds. This is called a dry shake.
- Add ice to shaker and shake hard again for ten seconds, just to chill the drink and add some froth.
- Strain into the chilled (and syrup-rimmed) cocktail glass.
