A few pages into the cookbook, Pretty Simple Cooking, by Sonja and Alex Overhiser (the couple behind A Couple Cooks), I found a quote from the late writer Wendell Berry. He said, “Our kitchens and other eating places more and more resemble filling stations. We hurry through our meals to go to work and hurry through our work in order to ‘recreate’ ourselves in the evenings and on weekends and vacations.”

Sonja and Alex are home cooks who did a cookbook. They believe in making and eating real food—good for the body and their taste buds. Because I love whenever vegetables are reimagined as fries, I gravitated toward their Delicata Squash Fries (accompanied by the aptly named, Awesome Sauce). For our pre-show meal, Chris Prosperi treated us to the duo’s Giant Portobello Burgers with Caramelized Onions. You’ll need a lot of napkins for these juicy vegetarian burgers. Chris and senior producer, Robyn Doyon-Aitken might say a knife and fork, too. And, because it’s apple season, we had to know more about Sonja and Alex’s recipe for Apple Cherry Cardamom Crumble. It’s a wholesome update on a family recipe. Use the tartest apple you can find, and start making this one as part of your fall dessert rotation (It feeds a crowd!).
